Reviews
...Nathan McHenry's intentions are never unclear. As the emcee he welcomes the audience like a good horror host, and ushers them back and forth across Cabaret's intersecting storylines, on journey all the way to hell. It's an impressive, athletic performance...
-Chris Davis For Memphis Flyer

As the leering Emcee, Nathan McHenry (so good in MEMPHIS: THE MUSICAL a few years back) is fascinating. He is not the small, effeminate image that Joel Grey projected in the film version: He is too virile. However, through his body movements, make-up (note the two hearts on his chest), and talent, he creates one of the best Master of Ceremonies I’ve seen. (Theatergoers in Memphis are already familiar with his prodigious musical talents.)

Finally, Nathan McHenry astounds as the Emcee at the Kit Kat Klub. In the role made famous by Joel Grey, McHenry perfectly embodies both man/woman throughout and provides pizazz and gusto in song and dance. He so easily disappears and fluctuates between genders that you’ll find yourself whispering to yourself, “Is that a man or a woman?” His debauchery hits all the right notes and he’s all over the stage—he definitely puts the “perv” in pervasive. He’s outstanding!

Jerry Lee Lewis - Million Dollar Quartet
The musical comedy counts on Lewis for laughs and POTS's Nathan McHenry delivers big on that score, at the expense of spiritual verisimilitude. Then he beats the piano to the ground, sings the hell out of his songs, and gives, and gives, and gives.

Huey Calhoun - Memphis the Musical
"Leading the perfect cast (AND I MEAN PERFECT CAST) are Nathan McHenry as the “loosey-goosey” redneck DJ, Huey Calhoun, and Nikisha Williams as the elegant, yet proud club singer, Felicia Farrell. It’s a testament to their skills that these two are able to make their most unpredictable love affair tenderly palpable. Playhouse on the Square could hold worldwide auditions and they still wouldn’t find better singers/actors than these two—they’re that good! Every show has a weak link—until this one. Do what you have to do to find a ticket because experiences like this in the theatre come along about once every 20 years or so. Towards the end of the show, the cast gathers to sing a powerful song called “Memphis Lives in Me” that will give you goosebumps on top of goosebumps as you realize just how great it is to also live in Memphis."
-Kevin Shaw for Focus Midsouth (2016)
Finally, Nathan McHenry returns in the starring role of Huey Calhoun, the white disc jockey who starts playing black music on a white radio station and creates a phenomenon. Whether it’s as the Emcee in Cabaret or the useless, TV-loving father in Matilda, the Musical, McHenry always throws himself 110% into the role he’s playing and I would venture to say he’s one of the most underrated performers in Memphis this past year. Once again, he’s back (all in) as a man who doesn’t understand why anyone has to see or care about the color of another person’s skin or self-regulate their love of a certain type of music
-Kevin Shaw for Focus Midsouth (2020)
Mr. Wormwood - Matilda: The Musical
In yet again strong performances, Nathan McHenry and Brooke Papritz, as Matilda’s parents (Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood) are appropriately comical, cartoonish and dreadful. Young audiences may laugh at them, but adults in the audience will know that, unfortunately, they’re not all that uncommon.
-Kevin Shaw For Focus Midsouth

L.M. - Pump Boys and Dinettes
Another nod goes to the young Nathan McHenry. I was told he's 22 years old, and rips the piano keys. I mentioned that he sings the baritone harmonies, which in my opinion, is the most difficult of the voice parts. He plays the accordion well and even manages to tap dance while lugging the accordion. There is no limit to this young man's talent, and he serves as musical director of the show as well.
-Rich McKinney for The Chillicothe News

Miss Deep South - Pageant
Miss Deep South (a "butter wouldn't melt in your mouth" Nathan McHenry) is like the simpering Southern Belle in Quentin Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED; Miss Deep South proves a mistress at ventriloquism (anyone recall 1965's Vonda Kay Van Dyke?)
-Joseph Baker for Broadway World Memphis

Johnny - American Idiot
"The determined Johnny (Nathan McHenry, who has the voice and "edge" to assert himself as the protagonist), like a punk rock version of Rice and Webber's EVITA and her Buenos Aires, is "ripe picking" for the Big City...it was almost shocking to see a cast as young and uninhibited as this..."
-Joseph Baker for Broadway World Memphis
Wicked Witch of the West - The Wizard of Oz

"Nathan McHenry plays the Wicked Witch as a hilariously campy drag queen, rather than as a woman who happens to be portrayed by a man. While the artist isn't listed in the program, the person responsible (Nathan) for McHenry's makeup deserves credit for the expert way in which the actor's cheeks and nose are contoured and his eyes and eyebrows are decorated. Any professional drag queen would be green with envy - and they, too, would be impressed with McHenry's portrayal, with his comically bitchy delivery of such drag-worthy lines as 'Only she would wear those slippers with those stockings.' As a whole, McHenry's Wicked Witch has the countencance and cackle of drag performer Sharon Needles, and judging by the raised volume in applause during Thursday's curtain call, McHenry's Wicked Witch is a crowd favorite - and rightfully so."
-Thom White for River Cities Reader
Frankie - Forever Plaid

"McHenry particularly stands out in his role as Frankie. his character demands a little bit of everything, from a jamaican accent in "Caribbean Plaid" to playing a soul-wrenching line on the melodica with his eyes closed. McHenry's delivery of a heartfelt monologue encouraging his friends to finish the show has just the right amount of seriousness, leading well into the bittersweet, but touching, closer, "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing."
-David Burke for Quad City Times
Music Direction
GGLAM
There are so many aspects to enjoy here: The clever disposals of the family members, the extremely sharp lyrics (thank goodness Nathan McHenry and his talented orchestra know how to accompany those excellent voices)
-Joseph Baker for #theatre901
Dreamgirls
Nathan McHenry’s orchestra elevates all things with its powerful, crisp sound. What a joy it is to hear real trumpets and trombones (kids, look it up) in an orchestra pit again.
- Kevin Shaw for Focus MIdsouth
Fun Home
Nathan McHenry proves again that he is an excellent Music Director
-Joseph Baker for #theatre901
Head Over Heels
Nathan McHenry’s rock band is invigorating and, suitably (considering the music), deafening.
-Joseph Baker for Broadway World Memphis
Heathers
Music Director Nathan McHenry (anyone who saw MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET knows that young man's talent) knows how to milk that score
